so i have a proposal for all of you. i was inspired to make this contest by the first line from A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, and i was wondering what people would think if i added a new aspect to this contest. up until now i have been making up first lines right and left, but i was thinking of using first lines from actual books for a few tries, and seeing how it worked. the rules would be altered slightly to include "try to keep your story as far from the plot of the actual book as possible" and i would give you the title and author of the book the line was from.
for this month i'll give you a normal first line, but what do you think of the idea? good bad? absolutely awful? don't care? give me some feedback, and i'll make a poll, just for fun.

2007-06-02 [Eleanor]: The problem I would have with a line like the opening of A Tale of Two Cities is that it’s just too well known and has too many connotations. If you were to use the opening of an actual book, it would have to be one with which we were mostly unfamiliar so that we didn’t have to purposely try to steer it away from the direction the original takes.

so now my new question is, well-known book, or not well-known book? i lean towards well-known, because that means that you have to actively think outside of the author's ideas for that book, and i think it would be more challenging, but i am open to suggestions.
